Classical music

OK, so this is a place to discuss classical music and share your favorite composers and pieces. We all know about super-famous composers, but there are a lot ofothers, either obscure or less talked about, who make incredible music and even some that wouldn't normally be considered as 'classical': contemporary and minimal composers, as well as film scores (some of which are absolutely amazing.)

So here are some of my favorites:

- Baroque music in general and Tomaso Albinoni in particular, with his Adagio in G Minor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mz4dpbk8YBs)
- Usually music that 'tells a story', like the one written by Tschaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Sibelius (Sibelius' 'Kullervo' is almost like a soundtrack. If you don't know what you're listening to, you might wonder what movie it's from Laughing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFyrP8NgV3A)
- Some recent and contemporary composers (I mentioned them in the Piano Music thread a while ago): Aarvo Part and Philip Glass (This is my absolute favorite from Glass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jf2YGbTjAGc) He also made the soundtrack of an amazing movie called Kundun, but it's quite different (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUyJ-DHcOzk)
- Many film score composers, like Howard Shore, John Williams, Brian Tyler and Dirk Reichardt
- Right now I'm into Shostakovich a lot.

So what are yours?

I like Hans Zimmer's Gladiator soundtrack
And Vangelis' 1492 is one of the best things ever if you ask me.

Listen to Pachelbel's Canon in D Major. Jeez, I didn't know that one until yesterday. It's simply stunning.

'I'll see you in hell, Pachelbel' Twisted Evil

Two lovely pieces I was reminded of today:

Vivaldi's 'Summer' 3rd movement - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjwwEg7-tuw (Someone I know once referred to this as 'the heavy metal of its age'. An interesting thought)

Boccherini - 'La Musica Nocturna de Madrid' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RjKmTVFJSo

Also, my brother's favorite classical piece: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6yuR8efotI

Did I already mention how great Handel's "Messiah" is? I'm always stunned when I listen to that piece of classic work.
