Where Fishes Go... has torn me into thousands of pieces...
Today I heard the core of it. I do not think I had to. Brain-mash. When you are listening to it non-stop, you face a strange condition, closing to insanity.  It is not the most powerful or nerve-breaking on the album, but god forbid, it gives me Goosebumps all over… Dark, surreal, out-of-bounds… Full of water.  And I wanted to give it a try and work listening to it. Ha! Sitting here with my hands around my head, staring into one point out there. My poor nerves. Sleeplessness does not surprise me anymore.

yeah I found god
and he was absolutely nothin' like me
he showed me up like some dime-store hooker
who was plain to see
I couldn't take it anymore so I went back to the sea
cuz' that's where fishes go
when fishes get the sense to flee

That’s it… No way back… There is no saving me today.

I love this post.

I am... speechless. For once.

I mean it's kind of cuter, but it begs the question: WHY?

As far as I see, the picture doesn't show where they go, but only where they come from. So it's pretty irrelevant Razz

Something like 'a dime-store hooker who looked ordinary'? I think 'plain' also means 'ordinary' or 'unexceptional' in English and that's how I always interpreted that bit of the song.

Of course, you might also take it along the lines of 'it was plain to see he was like a dime-store hooker' or something similar. I'm sorry, I just finished listening to a lecture on philosophic argumentation, so I'm probably not making any sense for the moment. Laughing Laughing

I expected YOU to answer Laurie Smile Thanks!

I meant the whole quote, both lines. 'Showed me up' - Would it mean then something like 'He made me feel embarrassed because it was plain to see he was like a dime-store hooker'? What do you think?

I always thought the 'showed me up' part meant 'showed me up to [the dime-store hooker's] room, where, as per professional specifications, we will have sex, ergo do something that is automatically belittling, because sex is an intimate thing that you shouldn't pay for.' Or something like that.

In more general terms, I think WFG can be seen as a religion vs. belief thing. The first part, with 'Yeah, I found god and he was absolutely nothing like me' may refer to a cheap, commercial side of religion, which sometimes makes it difficult for the individual to actually 'find' god. The second part ('... and he was absolutely just like me') is a lot more personal and direct ('He opened my mouth, looked down my throat etc') that has to do with belief.

Thoughts?

(Off top, but damn, I'm so glad we're doing this again Sheerleader Sheerleader I missed these discussions)

All I can say of WFG is the dialogue with the God. Those lines:

(God): Where you're going now?
(man, in a deep, drowning voice): What's your plan?

I thought it was more of a monologue here. I never saw it like this. Interesting...

Give it another spin, Laurie. Try the demo first, it is more clear on it.

Glad I started an interesting discussion here Very Happy I am actually thinking of including this song in my lyrics analysis term paper

I didn't know the meaning of 'showed me up' so I checked the dictionary. Here's what I got:

show sb up
1 (BrE, informal) to make sb feel embarrassed by behaving badly:
He showed me up by snoring during the concert.

2 to make sb feel embarrassed by doing sth better than them

So I thought though the first case is British, it makes sense here. How I see it now then is 'He made me feel embarrassed as if I would if I met a dime-store hooker who was obvious to recognize'. In other words, when he found God he felt embarrassed because that God was too straightforward or smth... Hm..
